Strategic Removal for Permanent Makeup Correction

Not every unwanted permanent makeup tattoo needs to be fully removed. Strategic removal targets specific areas of the tattoo for lightening, reshaping, or colour correction while preserving the parts that work. This approach is healthier for the skin because it avoids unnecessary full removal and re-tattooing.

Strategic removal may be right for you if:

Too dark: The shape is good but the colour is too bold or heavy. Lightening can create a softer, ombré effect without removing the entire tattoo.
Too cool, grey, or ashy: The pigment has shifted to an unnatural cool or grey tone. Removal lightens the tattoo and warms the remaining colour. Colour correction tattooing can then be applied over the lightened result.
Shape needs adjustment: The arch is too severe, the tail extends too far, or specific areas fall outside the desired shape. Targeted removal of those areas reshapes the tattoo without starting over.
Lines outside the natural shape: Tattooed lines that extend beyond the natural brow shape or lip border can be selectively removed without affecting the rest of the tattoo.

Strategic removal is a controlled, phased process. Candice determines which areas to target, how much lightening to achieve per session, and whether colour correction tattooing is needed after the removal phase.

Case Study:

Client wanted less harsh, dark and bold brows. There were also some tattooed lines outside of her brow shape. This is healthier for the skin as it doesn’t undergo full removal and then tattooing. It is more controlled and strategic.

Because she wanted the shape adjusted, softened and warmed up, I focused on overall lightening.
Focused on thinning out the shape, especially what would be outside the desired shape for the ideal outome.
After removed enough, did a brow tattoo with colour correction.
After the brows healed, we softened the front of the brow more to continue to shape it.

Saline Permanent Makeup Lightening and Tattoo Removal

Saline tattoo removal is a non-laser method that uses a saline solution to flush ink from the skin. The saline solution is tattooed into the unwanted permanent makeup or tattoo using the same technique as the original tattoo application. As the treated area heals and scabs form, the ink is drawn to the surface and expelled from the skin.

The tattoo lightens gradually over approximately 8 weeks following each session. Multiple sessions are typically required depending on the tattoo’s size, age, depth, and pigment type. Each session produces additional lightening. Results are cumulative across sessions.

Saline removal is ideal for permanent makeup and cosmetic tattoos. Common treatment areas include eyebrows, eyeliner, overlined lips (outside the lip tissue only), and small body tattoos (under 2″ x 3″). Each session is approximately 90 minutes.

Falcon Artistry offers emergency saline removal for clients who have received an unsatisfactory permanent makeup tattoo from another provider within the last 48 hours. Early intervention within this window can be more effective because the ink has not yet fully settled into the skin.

Saline Removal Compared to Laser Tattoo Removal

Saline and laser removal serve different purposes. Each method has specific advantages depending on the tattoo location, size, and pigment type.

Saline removal advantages:

Safe for use near the eyes (the only safe option for permanent eyeliner removal)
Works on all pigment colours without risk of darkening (laser can darken camouflage tattoos, freckle tattoos, and red pigments)
Ideal for small, delicate areas such as eyebrows, lips, and eyeliner
Allows strategic, targeted removal of specific areas without affecting the rest of the tattoo
Does not require specialized laser equipment or multiple wavelengths for different ink colours

For larger tattoos, laser removal may be more efficient. Falcon Artistry can refer clients to a laser removal clinic when the treatment area is too large for saline removal. Saline removal is the recommended method for all permanent makeup corrections and small tattoo removals.

Strategic Removal Process - Step-by-Step Example

A typical strategic removal case at Falcon Artistry follows a phased approach. The following example illustrates the process for a client with dark, bold, and harsh-looking eyebrow tattoos with lines outside the natural brow shape:

Overall Lightening: The first phase focuses on lightening the entire tattoo to soften the intensity. The goal is to reduce darkness and warm up the overall tone.
Shape Thinning: Targeted removal thins out the brow shape. Focus is placed on areas outside the desired final shape. Lines that fall beyond the natural brow border are removed.
Colour Correction Tattooing: Once sufficient lightening is achieved, a new brow tattoo with corrected colour is applied over the lightened base. This step adjusts warmth, tone, and overall appearance.
Final Refinement: After the corrected brows heal, additional softening and shaping can be done. The front of the brow or other specific areas are refined for the final result.

This phased approach produces a more natural result than full removal and re-tattooing. It minimizes skin trauma and preserves usable portions of the original tattoo.

Treatment Areas for Saline Permanent Makeup Lightening

Saline lightening at Falcon Artistry treats the following areas:

Eyebrows: Full lightening, shape correction, colour correction, and removal of lines outside the natural brow shape
Eyeliner: The only safe removal method for permanent eyeliner. Laser cannot be used near the eyes.
Lips (Overlined Areas): Removal of tattoo pigment that extends beyond the natural lip border. Lip tissue itself cannot be treated with saline removal. Only the areas outside the lip line can be lightened or removed.
Small Body Tattoos: Tattoos smaller than approximately 2″ x 3″. Larger body tattoos are better suited for laser removal.

Important Limitations of Saline Tattoo Removal

Saline removal is effective but has specific limitations that clients should understand before booking:

Gradual lightening, not instant removal: Each session produces incremental lightening. Full removal requires multiple sessions over several months. Clients should expect gradual improvement.
No treatment of migrated permanent makeup: Saline removal is not recommended for permanent makeup that has migrated (spread beyond the original tattoo area). The saline can cause migrated pigment to spread further.
Lip tissue cannot be treated: Only the overlined portions of a lip tattoo (outside the natural lip line) can be removed. Pigment on the lip tissue itself cannot be safely removed with saline.
Minimum 8 to 10 weeks between sessions: The tattoo continues lightening during the healing period. Adequate healing time is required before the next session for accurate assessment and safe treatment.
Not suitable for large tattoos: Larger body tattoos are better treated with laser removal. Falcon Artistry can provide a referral to a laser clinic when needed.

Saline tattoo removal tattoos - a saline solution into the unwanted tattoo to flush out the ink. As the skin heals and scabs form, the ink is drawn to the surface and expelled. The tattoo lightens gradually over approximately 8 weeks per session.
