Bellybutton Tattoo
A tattooed bellybutton recreates the appearance of a navel that was lost or significantly altered through surgery (such as a tummy tuck or abdominal reconstruction). The tattoo uses shading and colour gradients to create the illusion of depth and a natural-looking bellybutton. This is a common request from clients who are unhappy with the appearance of their navel after abdominal surgery.
After a tummy tuck, the bellybutton can flatten out and not appear to have as much definition. Through tattoo, we can restore the illusion of depth, shape, helping the bellybutton look more defined and anatomically realistic.
The client’s bellybutton flattened out after a tummy tuck. This is a case of creating the illusion of a deeper bellybutton, lower on the torso. Based off of the existing depression in the skin, I could still bring it down & elongate it, changing the appearance of her stomach. Image is taken immediately after the session so the colours are darker and there is redness and swelling (especially with scars.) The next session is to bring the shading further down and work off of my initial shape.
The client had a hernia as a baby and never had a bellybutton. A surgeon tried to create one for her through a subsequent surgery but it flattened out. We want to tattoo it darker than how we want it to heal, as the redness behind it makes it appear darker and thicker than it is.
The client wanted their bellybutton to appear deeper and less elongated. I used the upper part of the scar to create a wrinkle for “above” the bellybutton. This way, I was using the already compromised skin as part of it, without highlighting the elongation. This made it appear more of a regular size. I also added depth and wrinkles.
Other Custom Tattoo cases
Custom Fingernail Tattoo - A tattooed fingernail recreates the appearance of a nail that has been lost due to injury, surgery, or a congenital condition. Candice replicates the natural colour, shape, shading, and surface detail of a fingernail using custom-mixed pigments. The result restores visual familiarity to the hand and reduces self-consciousness about a missing nail.
Syndactyly (Webbed Toe) Tattoo - A syndactyly tattoo creates the visual appearance of separated toes on webbed or fused toes. The tattoo uses shading, shadow lines, and skin-tone matching to create the illusion of individual toes. Candice has performed this procedure as a live demonstration at the SPCP International Convention, showcasing her technique to industry professionals.
Candice was featured at the 32nd Annual SPCP Convention and she did this live demo on webbed toes (Syndactyly).
Syndactyly is the medical term for webbed or conjoined fingers and/or toes. Syndactyly is the most common malformation of the limbs.

We joked it looks like he did an oil change!
One of the key things to keep in mind with these type of tattoos, is that upon healing into the skin they do fade and thin out substantially. So if it looks like it’s subtle colours that match perfectly directly after (“for the gram”) -it’s going to heal way too light.
The next session is to layer to add more details.
